Augusta Canal Discovery Center
The Augusta Canal, built in 1845 as a source of power, water and transportation, is the only intact industrial canal in the American South in continuous use. During the Civil War it was the site of the Confederate States of America Powder Works complex. Deepened and widened in the 1870s, the canal brought an industrial boom to the city, especially in textile manufacturing. The Canal and its mills were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1978. The United States Congress designated the Augusta Canal and nearby land a National Heritage Area in 1996.
Located in a former textile mill, the Augusta Canal Discovery Center is your starting point of all canal boat tours. Be sure to allow time before or after your cruise to explore the exhibits, view the orientation film in the Rotary Club of Augusta Centennial Theater, and browse the Canal Gift Shop. Hours of operation, Tuesday-Saturday 9:30-4:30.

Sacred Heart Cultural Center
Originally built in December 1900, Sacred Heart was a Catholic Church serving the Catholic population of Downtown Augusta. Featuring towering twin spires, graceful arches, fifteen distinctive styles of brickwork, ninety-four stained glass windows, a barreled vaulted ceiling and intricately carved Italian marble altars it was an instant treasure of the community. Unfortunately, due to several factors Sacred Heart’s last mass was held on July 3, 1971.
Through the generous commitment of the Peter S. Knox family, the facility was rescued from sixteen years of vacancy. After extensive renovations, the building was reopened in 1987 as Sacred Heart Cultural Center. Now serving as a unique venue for social and cultural events such as art exhibitions, annual Garden Tours, choral concerts and is rented throughout the year for celebrations and civic functions.
Tours, both guided and self-led, take place daily, while a Gift Shop with over 50 local artisan consigners can be found at Sacred Heart.
