Morris Museum of Art

Jonathan Green: The Aesthetics of Heritage: A concurrent exhibition of portraits of the artist at work appears in the SRP Auditorium on the museum’s first floor, through June 29, 2025. Through Experience the Low Country through the vibrant work of renowned Gullah artist Jonathan Green during this special exhibition. The Morris Museum of Art is the oldest museum in the country dedicated to the art and artists of the American South and the only art museum in Augusta’s River Region.

Augusta Museum of History
The Augusta Museum of History collects, preserves, and interprets history in relation to the past of Augusta and the Central Savannah River region for the education and enrichment of present and future generations. Founded in 1937, the Augusta Museum of History is Augusta's oldest historical agency devoted to the preservation and presentation of local and regional history. The not-for-profit institution functions as the steward of the community's rich, diverse, and invaluable material past. The museum curates the largest and most significant historical collection in the CSRA and functions as a historical research and resource center for professional and amateur historians, media, organizations, and individuals, and is home to the permanent exhibition "Augusta's Story," a 12,000-year journey through the region's past. The African American experience can be found throughout the Museum. Whether displays on Civil Rights, slavery, judges, athletes, nurses, of entertainers, the Museum embodies many people and places of the past and present. When presenting entertainers the Augusta Museum of History has the honor and privilege of having the only major exhibition of Mr. James Brown’s in the world. On display are his costume, artifacts, and ephemera, that celebrates the man, his music, and his legacy. A gallery has interactive audio/visual featurettes, and intimate imagery that crafts an experience that allows guests to get up close and personal with Mr. Brown’s performances, philanthropic, and musical genius. The Museum exhibits tell many stories that visitors can view throughout the galleries. Stories of the textile mills, waterways, the long history of the military, and, yes, golf. One significant exhibit is "Celebrating A Grand Tradition: The Sport of Golf." This exhibition explores who, where, and how the game of golf has evolved over the centuries, the technological advances made, the rich history of golf in the Augusta area, and the people that have made this game so very special for so many. Covering the evolution of the technology side of of the sport-golf balls, golf attire, golf clubs, and golf attire, to the golf courses and golf greats. All this awaits the visitor.

James Brown Family Foundation Tour
The James Brown Family Historical Tours run once a week on Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. The tour begins at the Augusta Museum of History. Along with a guide, the bus tour visit sites that are significant to the history of James Brown growing up and living in Augusta. Highlights include such sites as the elementary school that James Brown attended, the home where he lived as a child, businesses he owned, The James Brown Statue, The James Brown Arena and much more! Patrons also get the opportunity to see the largest exhibit of his memorabilia at The Augusta Museum of History following the tour.

Springfield Village Park
Free and open to the public during daylight hours. This 2.5-acre park adjacent to Springfield Baptist Church celebrates the legacy and aspirations of the oldest black church in the United States and the community from which it sprang. Enjoy a timeline of the history of this area, a reflecting pool, bronze historical plaques and a 45-foot stainless-steel sculpture by Richard Hunt highlight the park. Augusta is proud to have played such an important role in the life of a world-renowned musical artist and is grateful Mr. Brown called Augusta home. As you journey through our funky sidewalks, you will walk where Mr. Brown walked and stand where he stood. We hope you enjoy this soul-city journey and feel the groove of Augusta's most famous son. On this point-of-interest tour, you will visit more than 10 historic locations from the life of the Godfather of Soul. Users may also sign up for the gamified pass on the website and earn prizes for visiting the stops and encounter audio from the friends and family of James Brown.
